St Martin/St Maarten is a party place where most visitors like to get out and about, enjoying the good beaches, many sports activities, fine food, nightlife and casinos. If you're the sociable type then joining in with the crowd is no great challenge, particularly if you book a place on group trips such as diving, sailing or hiking. Orient Bay is a busy, fun beach were singles can relax amid the crowds. Carnival is always a good time for solo travellers to visit.

If you prefer to be alone or are looking for a quiet place to relax you're probably better off on the nearby islands of Anguilla or Saba. Travellers, in particular lone women, should note that some parts of the island are far from salubrious. At night it is best to avoid the back-streets of Philipsburg and Marigot, and – on the Dutch side – the environs of adult entertainment centres that are effectively licensed brothels.
