St Martin/St Maarten is a popular island for weddings. One reason is its good flight connections that make it easy for guests from North America, Europe and the Caribbean to join the celebrations. Another is the wide range of hotels that can take things as big and grand as you dare, plus there's the many beaches and leisure activities to be enjoyed by all, including children. Weddings can also be planned to coincide with a cruise. Honeymooners are also drawn to the island, particularly if the time available is short, and also because a few nights here can easily be combined with some at a luxury hotel on St Barths, Anguilla or – if you really want to get away from the world – Saba. As for romance, on a party island with a multitude of nationalities all out to enjoy themselves everything is possible.

Wedding tips

The regulations for marriage are different on the French and Dutch sides of the islands. Couples often get married in St Maarten, where there is generally less officialdom, then move to St Martin to celebrate with some fine French food and wine.

Popular hotel venues for a ceremony or reception in St Martin are La Samanna in Long Bay and Le Domaine de Lonvilliers in Anse Marcel. On St Maarten consider the Westin St Maarten Dawn Beach Resort & Spa in Dawn Beach and The Cliff at Cupecoy. Luxury villas and yachts are other options.

With so much to think about, it pays to use a wedding planner. Sint Maarten Marry-Me, based in Philipsburg is highly experienced in this field and part of Artemia, the largest events organiser on the island.
