St Vincent and the Grenadines / Special Interests / Archaeology

By Sara Macefield

Archaeological remains on St Vincent point to the first settlements being established nearly 2,000 years ago. Several Amerindian sites have been discovered across St Vincent and artefacts are displayed in the island’s National Trust Museum in the capital Kingstown.

Amerindian rock art can be seen in a number of areas on the main island, including Indian Bay Point, Lambou and Barrouallie. There is also the Layou Petroglyph Park on St Vincent’s leeward coast. The site, north of Buccament Bay and close to the village of Layou, comprises a nature trail. The distrinctive carvings can be seen on a giant boulder that sits at the foot of the path. The area around Argyle on St Vincent is considered to be the site of one of the largest prehistoric habitation sites, while Chatham Bay at Union Island and nearby Frigate Island are reported to have archaeological sites, as does Park on Bequia.

Conservation

The Vincent & the Grenadines National Trust, established in 1969, is involved in various conservation projects on the islands and is also responsible for a handful of sites including Fort Duvernette on St Vincent. It also has ongoing projects at Fort Charlotte, the Youroumei Heritage Village and the Argyle Heritage Park.
