St Vincent and the Grenadines / Special Interests / Bareboat Charter

By Frances and Michael Howorth

When the call of sailing the Grenadines becomes too strong to ignore it is time to fly into St Vincent and head down to the Blue Lagoon. There, or in islands to the south, fleets of well maintained bareboat sailing craft wait to whisk you to paradise. So well organised are the local boat boys that it is easy to stay in isolated anchorages for days on end without ever sailing into centres of civilisation.  They bring daily supplies directly to your yacht and even take away the rubbish.  Bargain with them for freshly caught lobster, BBQ them for dinner on deck and eat while still wearing swimwear, that way when the butter trickles down your front you simply jump over the side to wash it off.

Bareboating in the Grenadines is aimed at sailors who are well experienced and confident of sailing in the prevailing north-easterly winds. Conditions are more challenging during winter, while in summer the sailing is calmer.  You will need to prove to the charter company that you can sail and have the relevant cruising skills but it is also possible to organise a skipper and even a cook if you wish.  If you are into having massages, this can be fixed to happen on board your yacht, or you can join a scuba dive.
