St Vincent and the Grenadines / Special Interests / Cruise

By Sara Macefield

This string of 32 islands and cays, stretching from St Vincent in the north to Grenada in the south, were made for exploring by sea. Visiting by boat, yacht or ship is an ideal way to discover these hideaways with their pristine beaches, azure waters and hidden coves. Larger cruise ships occasionally call at St Vincent, but they tend to be too large to venture through the rest of the Grenadine islands, leaving them for smaller ships and yachts which call at Bequia, Mayreau, the Tobago Cays and Union Island.

St Vincent is the largest and most developed and its attractive capital Kingstown, where cruise ships dock, is worthy of a wander. Other points of interest include the St Vincent Botanical Gardens, the oldest in the Western Hemisphere, and Wallilabou Bay, a picturesque spot known for diving and as the location for the Pirates of the Caribbean films. St Vincent’s rugged topography makes it perfect hiking territory for visitors wanting to climb the slopes of the dormant La Soufriere volcano.

In Bequia, the main harbour town is Port Elizabeth, with its brightly-painted buildings and pretty waterfront. Visitors can also visit the remains of 18th century Fort Hamilton and the Old Hegg Turtle Sanctuary. On Union Island, points of interest include a 17th century fort, Fort Hill and Mount Taboi, at 1,000ft, the highest mountain peak in the Grenadines. The deserted Tobago Cays are renowned for their beautiful stretches of sand and brilliant snorkelling.
