St Vincent and the Grenadines / Special Interests / Flowers & Gardens

By Jane Anderson

St Vincent is a lush island and its Botanical Gardens are the oldest in the Western hemisphere, founded in 1765 over 20 acres of land. The gardens ensure that rare species of plants and shrubs are conserved, whilst their medicinal values and places of origin are studied. For example, the gardens are home to a third generation breadfruit tree – a sucker from the original plant brought by Captain Bligh (of the Bounty fame) in 1793.

Montreal Estate Gardens, St Vincent is located at an altitude of 1500 feet surrounded by banana plantations and rainforest. The gardens contain a wide range of tropical plants and shaded areas devoted to anthurium and red ginger for the production of cut flowers.

Another great way to see the island’s flora is in the Mesopotamia Valley, one of the lushest in the Caribbean and split by a road that passes winding rivers, deep forests and terraced farms planted with nutmeg, cocoa, coconut, breadfruit and bananas.

The islands of the Grenadines feature gardens in and around the main resorts.
