Tobago / Special Interests / Cruise

By Sara Macefield

Small and perfectly formed, Tobago is the archetypal island hideaway – and still relatively undeveloped. You won’t find sprawling resorts, duty-free shopping centres or casino hotels here. The emphasis is very much on natural attractions with sleepy villages, picturesque white sand beaches and impressive flora and fauna with some of the best birdlife and diving in the Caribbean.

For cruise passengers, Tobago offers a more relaxing experience with attractions based around its natural attributes or historical ones. There are various forts, though the most impressive and best preserved is Fort King George in the capital Scarborough, which also houses the Tobago Museum. The island’s Roxborough Rainforest, dating from 1776, is said to be the world’s oldest legally-protected rainforest and the setting for various eco-adventures and hiking trails. Here visitors can walk to the Argyle Falls, where they can swim in the plunge pools at the base. Other attractions include the Arnos Vale Waterwheel Park, a former sugar estate dating from the 1850s and Richmond Great House, a restored plantation house.

Cruise ships call at Scarborough, which holds limited appeal, but island tours highlight the unspoilt surroundings, and as the island is fairly compact, these take just a few hours.
