Tobago / Special Interests / Golf
The two 18-hole golf courses on Tobago offer golfers a very different experience. The Mt Irvine Bay Golf Course offers a leisurely golf experience and was laid out over 40 years ago by Commander John Harris on a gently-rolling former sugar and coconut plantation on the island’s north coast. Coconut trees still abound and there are views of the Caribbean from every hole.
The 27-hole, PGA-designed (Bob Hunt and Marcus Blackburn) course at Tobago Plantations Golf & Country Club is an altogether more testing affair, stretching over 7000 yards with several holes alongside the Atlantic and pot bunkers guarding the greens, giving it a links feel, while others wind through coconut palm trees and mangroves. Strong onshore winds can add to the challenge.
Mt Irvine Bay Golf Course - An 18-hole, par 72 course of 6793 yards from the back tees, it features five par-5 holes and five par-3s, the pick of which is the 7th, with water on the left of the green and out of bounds on the right. Water comes into play on four holes. Guests at Mount Irvine Bay Hotel enjoy a 15% discount on green fees. Rental clubs and buggies are available, as are caddies. Lessons are also available.
Tobago Plantations Golf & Country Club - The original 18-hole, 7005-yard, 72 par, buggy-only championship course has been augmented by the nine-hole Sugar Mill course, more suited to novice golfers. Green fees include shared buggy. Club and shoe rental is also available. Facilities include a golf academy, driving range, practice pitching and putting greens, and a clubhouse with bar, restaurant, pro shop, lounge and changing rooms. The golf club forms part of an eco resort featuring the 200-room Hilton Tobago hotel and including nature trails and canopy walks through virgin mangrove forest. Wildlife includes migratory birds and caymans.
