Trinidad / Special Interests / Archaeology
Trinidad used to be part of the South American continent, but when it separated in around 7000 years BC it is known that Amerindians lived as a hunter-gatherers on the island., which they called Kairi, Land of the Hummingbird. Clues to their existence have come from fossil remains and settlements unearthed at Blanchisseuse, Moruga and Mayaro. The archaeological site at Banwari Trace in south-western Trinidad is said to be the oldest pre-Columbian site in the Caribbean. In 1969, the remains of a human skeleton were discovered there. Dubbed, Banwari Man, and hailed as Trinidad’s oldest resident, it is believed to date from 3400 BC.
