Trinidad / Special Interests / Cruise

By Sara Macefield

Trinidad isn’t your typical Caribbean island idyll. Sitting at the southerly end of the Caribbean, just a short distance from the coast of Venezuela, it is larger, busier and more industrialised than its neighbours. But it has been blessed with rich eco-systems and wildlife more associated with South America and these are its main attractions for visitors. Trinidad is famous for its excellent bird-life – some of the best in the Caribbean – and beautiful rain-forested terrain. The island’s culture, represented by a mix of cultures and traditions, is famously personified by its spectacular carnival, famous as one of the world’s biggest street parties.

The capital, Port of Spain, is where cruise ships dock at the city’s Cruise Ship Complex with its tourist information office, shops and craft market. The city’s main shopping district is a few minutes’ walk away, but Port of Spain is best seen on city tours which take visitors to highlights such as the National Museum and Art Gallery, the Magnificent Seven colonial houses, the city’s main park Queen’s Park Savannah, Botanical Gardens and the President’s House. Outside the city, attractions include the Chaguaramas National Park, the 19th Century Fort George built by the British, and Mount St Benedict, the oldest Benedictine monastery in the Caribbean. Another popular draw is the Asa Wright Nature Centre, famous for its natural surroundings and bird-spotting opportunities. These can be seen on half or full-day tours of the island.
