Trinidad / Special Interests / Scuba Diving

By Stephen Thorpe

Trinidad lacks the natural underwater attractions of its sister island and also suffers from poor visibility owing to the sedimentary currents flowing from the Orinoco Delta, and as such has a very limited and low profile diving resource. That said there are probably about 20 diveable sites around the north west peninsular with several off the islands of the Dragon’s Mouth like La Tinta, the Wreck of the Angostura, and Doctor’s Reef off Chacachacare and others stretching as far east as La Vache Bay and Saut d’Eau island on the north coast.

Rick’s Dive World in Chaguaramas, is the best, most professional operation, managed by PADI licenced Ricky Rampaul, a Master Scuba Diver Trainer. Rick’s is certified to conduct all levels of scuba training including introductory dives, open water certification courses, open water referral, advanced open water, rescue diver and divemaster courses, the latter the first step to a professional qualification in the PADI system. He also sells equipment and does service and repairs.

A modern recompression chamber is located in Tobago at Roxborough, 20 minutes south of Speyside and about an hour’s drive north-east of Crown Point Airport.
