Trinidad / Special Interests / Museums

By Sara Macefield

As you might expect for such a developed island, Trinidad has a number of museums concentrating on different aspects of the country’s culture and history. In addition to the main National Museum, the capital Port of Spain has its own city museum, while the police force has its own police service museum, housed at the capital’s police headquarters. There is also a Money Museum, located in the Central Bank at Independence Square, and a museum of military and aviation history.

National Museum and Art Gallery, Frederick Street, Port of Spain - Housed in a stately classical building, just south of Queen’s Park Savannah, Trinidad’s main museum is home to 10,000 items displayed in seven major galleries including a display of paintings by Trinidad’s acclaimed 19th century artist Michel-Jean Cazabon.

Cricket Heritage Museum, Queen’s Park Oval, Port of Spain - This records the history of the club, from when it was based at Queen’s Park Savannah, and contains a display of photos charting the development of cricket in Trinidad and Tobago since the early 1900s, along with the autographed bat of the West Indies team after their first Test victory over England at Lords in 1950.
