Trinidad / Special Interests / Solo Travel
Like a lot of other West Indian islands, there is a strong macho element in Trinidad society and though men need not be unduly concerned if travelling alone, women may well be the subject of unwanted attention. It’s unlikely to be of aggressive intent however, and local women are adept with the right phrase or put down to deflect any potential harassment. This is not as easy for the foreign newcomer of course but any spontaneous response should contain a degree of humour. Always try and be ‘street aware’ and look confident; never visit remote beaches alone, nor hiking trails, waterfalls or other points of interest.
Trinidadians are generally a happy-go-lucky, outgoing, joyful band of people and the likelihood is you’ll have absolutely no trouble or angst whatsoever. Assuredly, there are many establishments where you’ll be well looked after as a single traveller.
