With so little time for sports in busy, twenty-first century life, it is a pleasure to spend a little time enjoying them while on holiday. Perhaps try out scuba-diving or windsurfing, as you always meant to... The Caribbean is well set up for sport in general and watersports in particular.
Most waterfront hotels will have some watersports on offer, or available nearby. Snorkelling on tropical reefs is a great experience if you’ve never tried it, but there are also more active sports like waterskiing and windsurfing. One great thing about watersports in the Caribbean is the warmth. You can learn without getting freezing cold. The same goes for sailing, which is very big in the Caribbean. There are a number of regattas which are worth attending, either as crew or by taking a bareboat as a group and entering the cruising yachts class. There are plenty of opportunities for fishing, in shallow water and offshore.
On land it is easy to arrange a game of tennis, but on some islands there is also riding horses and mountain biking. Several islands of course have good golf courses. If you are feeling a little more active, hiking in Caribbean rainforests is excellent.
The West Indians themselves are keen on certain sports, both as competitors and as spectators. In the former British Caribbean everything stops for the cricket, ditto in the Latin islands for baseball. On some islands you will find an interest in horse-racing, with horses from around the region and from the metropolitan countries. These events are fun to attend because in addition to the sport, they are always a lively occasion.
