Cayman Islands / Sport

Adventure

Grand Cayman has the Black Pearl skate-boarding park at Grand Harbour, which also has an artificial wave pool for budding surfers. Another unusual activity is to go for a kayak tour of the mangroves of the North Sound and the Central Wetlands with Cayman Kayaks. It’s possible to sign up for evening kayaking trips to experience the natural phenomenon of bio-luminescence when plankton emits a ghostly green glow.

Bowling

King’s Sports Centre (off Crewe Road bypass) offers ten-pin bowling sessions and shoe hire.

Cricket

Unlike many larger Caribbean nations Cayman does not have a strong cricket tradition, though it is one of the sports that is undergoing development and there is a local league.

Cycling

Grand Cayman’s flat terrain means there is an active local cycling club, and there are competitions throughout the year – notably the “Massive 100-Mile Bike Challenge” which is an endurance event rather than a race.

Go-Karting

There is a Go-Kart track on Grand Cayman (minimum age 14yrs – no sandals to be worn). Arrive and Drive’ times are generally from 6-9 p.m. daily. Bookings by arrangement.

Golf

Please see our Special Interest - Golf section.

Health/Fitness

Grand Cayman has a number of gyms, several of which allow temporary membership for visitors. Many of the hotels and resorts have their own fitness rooms which are usually only open to guests. We recommend Fitness Connection.

Running/Athletic

A Cayman marathon is held in early December to raise funds for local charities. Individuals and relay teams of four runners may enter.

Squash

Squash lessons are available from Mark Chaloner at Cayman Sports, temporary membership is available at the South Sound Squash Club and there are two public courts at King’s Sports Centre (off Crewe Road bypass).

Tennis

Many of the hotels on Grand Cayman have courts, as do a number of the condominium complexes. On the Sister islands, the Brac Reef Beach Resort and the Little Cayman Beach Resort both have floodlit courts. On Grand Cayman private coaching may be arranged through Warren Urquhart at Cayman Sports. Coaching may also be available from the Cayman Islands Tennis Club – (temporary membership available on payment of a fee).
