Dominica / Sport

By Stephen Thorpe

Like most West Indians, Dominicans are a sports loving people, cricket and football pre-eminent though topography stymies the land area devoted to it. The Windsor Park Stadium constructed by the Chinese in Roseau has boosted the image of sport and the wonderful old Botanical Gardens cricket ground is right next door but those aside facilities for communities as a whole are limited. Portsmouth has an expansive flat sports field, and there are two fine roadside cricket grounds at Macoucherie on the west coast (the Shillingford complex) and west of Stowe at Grand Bay in the south. Other rural outposts will have rough pasture grounds wherever the terrain allows.

Cycling

An extremely enjoyable activity if you can cope with some of the more serious inclines but the flatter coastal roadways are usually easily negotiable for someone of average fitness. Nature Island Dive offer solo or accompanied biking on old inland trails above Soufriere Bay in the south, to the Layou Valley, Cuba Road on the west coast above Mero and around La Plaine and Sari Sari falls on the east coast.

Health & Fitness

Fitnesss is accepted as part of the natural order in Dominica, it being a place where stamina building long treks are a necessity for many schoolchildren, and walking is never a hardship for the young. The country’s challenging terrain is effectively everyone’s gymnasium, though roads and the bus are having a greater impact now in many of the remoter communities. In a ‘rural’ country, gyms are not seen as vital commodities though a couple exist in Roseau at Fort Young Hotel and the Garraway Hotel.
