In Depth

St Lucia is a great island to explore and the best way to travel independently is to hire a car. Or you might decide to go for a Jeep. Many of the most interesting sights are off the main highways, down St Lucia’s tracks and unmade side-roads which can be quite rough and rutted. We recommend Cool Breeze Car/Jeep Rentals as one of the leading companies for St Lucia car rentals.

Based in the south of the island in the ‘New Development’ area of Soufrière (inland from the waterfront), Cool Breeze has around 90 vehicles. Although they are headquartered in the south, they have five locations around the island. There are booths at both of the airports, George FL Charles near Castries and at Hewanorra in the south, at Jalousie Piantation Hotel (just south of Soufrière) in the south and in the JQ Mall in Rodney Bay in the north of the island.

Cool Breeze are happy to deliver to any location on the island (free of charge) and they will issue the local driving permit at the same time, on presentation of your own licence from home. It is quite possible to return the car to another location, perhaps at the airport on departure.

The vast majority of the fleet are Jeeps (only about 20 of the vehicles are cars). This may be important because many of the sites and remoter beaches are to be found at the end of unmade tracks which become muddy after rain. They also have number of minibuses for hire aswell.

The company was formed in 1992 by Stephen Abraham, who is originally from St Lucia but who has spent many years in the US Virgin Islands, where he founded the first Cool Breeze Car/Jeep Rentals in the small island of St John. He then returned home to set up Cool Breeze St Lucia. The manager of the company in St Lucia is Andrea Faucher, who is based in Soufrière. Cool Breeze Car/Jeep rentals was recently awarded a Par Excellence Award by the St Lucia Hotel and Tourism Association.

Staff

There are twelve staff who are distributed in pairs around the offices. The longest serving is Tony, who is based in Soufrière and other reservations staff members you may come across are Sophie in the Castries office and Eugenia in Vieux Fort. They do some repairs at the garage attached to the Soufrière office. Major repairs are made in local garages.

Reservations

It is worth bearing in mind that there can be a shortage of St Lucia rental cars in the run up to Christmas when in addition to the influx of holidaymakers there is also a large number of family members flying in. It can be busy through the season and then again at the time of the Jazz Festival in May. It is worth booking your car in advance.
