Anguilla / Things to do

By Tess Hokin

Driving around Anguilla takes only a couple of hours from one end to the other, and on first impression it may not seem like there is much to discover apart from the beaches. Sprinkled along its flat, scrub-covered landscape however, are some hidden gems which give the island depth and charm.

An interesting local arts and crafts scene has developed in recent years, and everything from contemporary water-colours to driftwood sculptures can be found in the island’s many galleries. There are birdwatching opportunities (Anguilla is home to 159 species, 68 of which are rare) and the island also has a rich history. The Heritage Trail gives a good sense of the local culture and will take you around the old salt factory and pumphouse (now a lively restaurant and nightspot), to the Valley Well, the Heritage Museum, and 7 other historical sites around the island. Anguilla also has a multitude of churches of varying religions which are always welcoming to tourists and have lively, song-filled services and interesting architecture.

Another great way to experience the island is by tour- guided either by one of the many willing and experienced taxi drivers, or on its crystal blue waters by boat, see Anguilla Day Sails/Boat Trips. Some fishing and diving excursions are also available, but if you don’t fancy catching your dinner, there are many restaurants on the island, ranging from the five star to cheap and cheerful local roadside stands. Anguilla has a reputation for excellent food so its cuisine should not be overlooked, see our Anguilla Restaurants guide.

Of course, there are always the thirty-three gorgeous beaches which hold endless entertainment for all ages, and where most of the daytime fun and the nightlife takes place, see our Anguilla Beach Life section.
