Dominica / Shopping

By Stephen Thorpe

Dominica is not renowned as a shopping destination but there are some interesting artists at work and fine basket ware in the Carib Territory, as well as products from various cottage industries like exotic soap from the The Coal Pot Soap Company, and Heaven Scent. Spice, herbs, oils and unguents from Caribbean Magic Spice at The Ruins on King George V Street; their pungent Bay Oil is actually exported and Ojas Oil is recommended as a panacea for all muscular or skeletal woes.

Chemists abound, so do local stores in Roseau where there are also three supermarkets, Astaphans, Whitchurch and Brizee’s Mart. Not exactly megastores, but with a wide enough range of goods for everyday necessity.

Expansion in cruise ship arrivals has led to more duty free shops and Jewellers International and Whitchurch Duty Free are both in the Fort Young waterfront shopping complex. Others worth visiting are Ego Boutique, for ladies wear, shirts, pottery and artwork, the Duty Free Emporium for clothes, leather goods and Cuban cigars and Pirates Ltd on Long Lane for French gourmet cheeses.
