Saba / Things to do

By Nigel Tisdall

Saba is an island best-suited to nature-lovers and people who appreciate peace and quiet. Blissfully undeveloped with little commercialism, it does not offer a lot of “things to do” - and for most travellers and residents that's exactly what they like about “The Unspoiled Queen”.

Casinos

There are no casinos on Saba – but plenty on nearby St Maarten.

Day Sails/Boat Trips

Saba has no marina – sailing trips are best arranged through companies based on St Martin/St Maarten. It could be possible to set up an individual boat trip through a dive operator or local fishing boat – enquire at the harbour or Saba Tourist Bureau.

Island Tours

With just one main road, finding your way around by rental car is pretty straightforward - although the steep hills and tight bends will not suit all drivers. Taxis meet ferries and flights and you will already have seen half the island simply by the time you have transferred from one of these arrival points to the main tourist centre of Windwardside.

An island tour by taxi costs from $50 for up to four passengers.

Shopping

Want to save money? Then you're in the right place. You can easily stock up on provisions, diving equipment and daily necessities, but beyond that the shopping scene on Saba is pretty limited. Almost every store of interest is in Windwardside. Some shops are closed on Sunday.

We recommend:

El Momo Folk Art, Windwardside - Saba's largest gift store is the best place to look for island souvenirs. You'll also find colourful Caribbean art and a selection of toys and games upstairs.

Scout's Place Gift Shop, Windwardside - Lost your flip-flops? Feeling the cold? This is a good place to pick up a sweatshirt with a Saba logo or treat your diving buddy to a pirate-themed T-shirt.

Theatre

The main focus for cultural events and entertainment on the island is the Eugenius A. Johnson Centre in Windwardside.
