Saba / Conservation
Saba is an island of great beauty with a rich underwater life and little unsightly development. Such assets are crucial to sustaining its future as an ecotourist destination, and both the islanders and the Dutch government appreciate the importance of conservation. Saba is one of six islands in the not-for-profit Dutch Caribbean Nature Alliance which works to safeguard key areas that have been designated as terrestrial and marine parks, as well as hot-spots such as the nearby Saba Bank, which has the greatest diversity of marine plants in the Caribbean. Founded in 1987, the Saba Conservation Foundation manages both Mount Scenery Park, which protects 130 acres (53ha) of forest and coastal land in the northeast of the island, and the Saba National Marine Park, which protects the entire coastline to a depth of 200ft (60m).
If you would like to get more involved with conservation on Saba, we recommend:
Saba Conservation Foundation, Fort Bay - A small shop and information resource by the harbour selling books, postcards, clothing and equipment. You can also make donations and become a “Friend of the SCF”. Closed weekends.
See and Learn, Windwardside - A non-profit foundation working to sustain Saba's viability as as an ecotourism destination, which organises a month-long programme of related events in October.
Trail Shop, Windwardside - A volunteer-run shop close to the starting point for climbing Mount Scenery where you can buy books, guides and equipment, and get information on trails.
