You'll only find casinos on the Dutch side of St Martin/St Maarten. Don't expect Vegas – in some cases they are not much more than a few playing tables and banks of slot machines in the lobby of a large hotel. Others are glittering, standalone venues with valet parking, live entertainment, plush interiors and an upscale restaurant. For all their shiny trappings, there's no escaping the sad side to these windowless pleasure boxes where both visitors and locals find themselves drawn inside by their dreams - while outside lies a genuine world of sunny skies and perfect beaches.
