Journalist’s Review
In Depth
CV Travel is a villa holiday company with a worldwide brief that includes a specialty Caribbean arm. Based in London, the company was founded in 1972 and initially covered Corfu villas (hence the company’s initials), but over the years it has expanded to cover holidays in private villas - and in some hotels - in many areas around the world, particularly in Europe. In 2007 CV Travel added a Caribbean portfolio, which it introduced through the acquisition of The Owners’ Syndicate, a Caribbean villa specialist with a long established programme (running since 1992). The latter company has now been completely absorbed into CV Travel, gathering the expertise of its members of staff, re-training and redirecting them and gradually increasing their reach.
The Caribbean programme, which is headed up by Philip Leighton, offers a broad range of villas of all sizes and prices across twelve islands. These range from simple beachfront cottages to some of the smartest houses in the Caribbean and include plantation estate houses and even a few private islands. Most houses will have a cook and a housekeeper, but at the top end you can expect a full staff (on most islands at any rate), including maids, gardeners and sometimes butlers - who will act as a concierge for you, helping you to plan every aspect of your holiday, down to restaurant bookings and treasure hunts for your children. In addition to this main brief of villa-based holidays, the company has always offered other options in hotel-based accommodation. This include some of the Caribbean’s loveliest small hotels and inns, as well as some villa resorts, which offer a combination of the facilities and the independent living of a villa. As of 2009, the most recent addition to their portfolio was the island of St Barths, where there is an exceptional crop of private homes and villas for rent.
Enquiries and reservations for the Caribbean portfolio are looked after by a team of four consultants, each of whom has visited the villas, hotels and resorts featured by the company. Although the Caribbean programme is relatively new for CV Travel, it was developed over many years and the team has taken the baton of the inherited relationships. These contacts and the team’s undoubted enthusiasm for the product give the consultants a solid background when it comes to helping clients select the best villa and the best island for their needs. They can tell you exactly how big the pool is and how near the villa is to restaurants or a scuba diving centre. And knowledge of the individual islands is important because the situation can vary from one island to the next - in some it might be normal for a villa to have several members of staff, while in another cooks and butlers may not be the norm. The team is happy to share their knowledge of the islands – of the geography, the local culture, cuisine and of course individual villas - and they take pride in making sure to create a good all-round Caribbean holiday for their clients.
CV Travel does not restrict itself to packaged holidays - the team is happy to book your flights only if your house is already arranged. Similarly, if you are using Airmiles then they can book the accommodation for you. It’s also worth saying that because CV Travel is fully bonded you are financially more secure than if you were to book with a house owner in the Caribbean direct.
Brochure & Website
CV Travel's brochure is commendable for its detailed portrayal and photography of each island, its in depth descriptions of its chosen villas, villa resorts and featured hotels. It contains personal recommendations of particular properties to suit client requirements. The company has a strong, easy to navigate website, which includes a number of properties which are not included in the brochure. The website is constantly updated with new properties and images, as well as with special and late offers.
Tailor Made & Two Centre Holidays
The Caribbean is ideal for island hopping, both by air and by sea. The islands are closer together than many people realise and they can provide a range of interesting contrasts. The ‘hub’ islands in the area, particularly Barbados and Antigua, work well as stepping stones to smaller islands.
Antigua marries well with Nevis for example, or Anguilla or the British Virgin Islands.
Barbados links well with Grenada, St Lucia, Tobago or one of the Grenadines.
Grenada goes together well with the islands of Mustique, Canouan, Palm Island or Petit St Vincent. It also works well with Tobago.
With its extensive portfolio across the various islands, which includes most of the best Caribbean hotels and resorts as well as villas, the CV Travel team is able to offer good advice and will put together a Caribbean holiday experience with good variety.
Accomodation Only
Generally speaking, the price of a holiday will work out better if you book flights in conjunction with your accommodation. However CV Travel will organise accommodation only if you wish to make your own flight arrangements. They will still include airport transfers as part of their service and the company’s local representation is available to provide assistance as required.
