Trinidad / Real Estate

By Judith Baker

Trinidad and Tobago is one of the wealthiest nations in the Caribbean.  The island of Trinidad is world-famous for the Trinidad Carnival, but unlike many of its Caribbean neighbours which rely on tourism, Trinidad depends heavily on oil and gas production.

However wealth does not bring immunity from recession, and in 2009 Trinidad and Tobago’s GDP contracted by 3.5%.  There has been recovery since 2010, and after a period of decline, the construction industry got a boost from the government’s development plan “Vision 2020”, which consisted mainly of construction projects however the scheme was withdrawn with a change of governments.  Prices fell around 20% during the recession, but there are signs of recovery, not least in demand for middle-income housing.

In the highly desirable West region near Port of Spain, interest is also slowly returning in upscale properties selling from US$312,500 to US$1,250,000

Some of the most attractive locations to rent or buy in Trinidad are Westmoorings, an upscale Port of Spain suburb, with high-rise apartment complexes, Goodwood Park an  exclusive neighbourhood near Port of Spain, with large private houses and Bayside Towers a new luxurious apartment complex and The Greens, Maraval Valley a  modern, luxurious gated community
