All-Inclusive in the Caribbean

Where it’s all laid on, but try not to miss out on the island…

By Sara Macefield

The all-inclusive concept was born in the Caribbean more than 30 years ago as the region’s hotels strived to provide something extra for guests.

Instead of expecting them to pay for drinks or meals in the usual manner of traditional properties, this new generation of resorts brought in a hitherto unheard of system where such elements were bundled together.

Not only did it help customers to budget for their holidays, but for nervous travellers wary of exploring outside the hotel confines, it meant they could stay on-property, knowing that virtually everything was paid for.

But this in itself was to become one of the biggest drawbacks for islands where all-inclusive properties took root.

With guests choosing to spend more time at their chosen hotels, critics pointed out that the disadvantages were two-fold.

Not only did local bars and restaurants suffer from the resultant loss of trade, but the hotel guests themselves missed out on the authentic experiences of the destination.

However, some Caribbean all-inclusive resorts have since tried redress the balance by using local suppliers; teaming up with nearby restaurants for dining programmes; and encouraging guests to explore beyond the boundaries of the hotel either on their own or on tours.  These resorts are among the best in class.
