Eco Resort/Camping in the Caribbean

Where tourism meets the natural Caribbean…

By Stephen Thorpe

Camping is far from a mainstream diversion around the islands but there are indications that entrenched attitudes are changing and the ultimate  freedom of the great outdoors, a night beneath the stars, is at last becoming ever so slightly more accessible to visitors and locals alike.

Campers usually have a greater affinity with the natural world, it’s generally inexpensive, and is favoured by those requiring quite literally a closer to the earth experience. Theoretically too, it should engender a greater appreciation and contact with local communities and culture.

Britain is the world leader but the days of simple canvas tents are long gone with tepees, yurts and other singular structures like ecopods and geodomes increasingly popular—indeed, “glamping” or glamorous camping has at last gained a tenuous foothold in Dominica. The notion of “too posh to pitch” is definitely a thing of the past. Unalloyed freedom, a sense of liberation and getting back to basics are the core values but, increasingly, a dash of luxury never goes amiss be it a hot shower, comfortable bed or general home comforts.

Several “eco resorts” of varying authenticity have also sprung up in some islands in recent years, some of which are laudably “off the grid” and trail blazers effectively for a new style of “camping”. Others are at the opposite end of the scale, expensive, well appointed, high end developments utilising sustainable principles wherever viable and strong on solar and wind power, organics and re-cycling systems.
