Cayman Islands / Accommodation

By Tim Ecott

The few large hotels in Cayman are restricted mostly to the Seven Mile Beach area on Grand Cayman. Some mainstream American brands are represented, ranging from the ‘Comfort Suites’ style (breakfast buffet bar, -half-kitchen in room and snack restaurant by the pool) to the full-service ‘Ritz Carlton’ complete with tennis courts, golf course, high-end spa and a choice of restaurants. A very high proportion of visitors opt for the self-catering apartments, always referred to locally as ‘condos’ (condominiums). Some of these are let privately by their owners, others through agencies or through the management companies that administer and service the apartment blocks.

They may seem relatively characterless from the outside but ‘condo’ standards tend to be high, and they will generally include full kitchens, en-suite bedrooms and washer/drier facilities. Most of these condominiums will be close to the beach and in prime locations, and many are situated close to the hotels so that guests can make use of the nearby restaurants and amenities. Understandably, the interiors of the apartments will vary according to the owners’ taste – but they are all inspected and must conform to Tourist office standards.

Villa rentals are also a strong component of the Cayman tourist offering, though mainly on Grand Cayman rather than the two smaller islands.

All three islands have small resorts which cater principally for scuba-divers, with on-site dive centres and accommodation packages which can be tailored to include some or all meals, and a certain number of dives. Guest houses, modelled very much on the British B&B concept are starting to appear, and are proving popular as an alternative to the hotel and condo market.

All hotels and accommodation providers are required to charge + 10% government tax.
